What has the room of the Boeing 747-100, but can land at more airports? Well, the DC-10 of course. This 1971 American Airlines shows how the DC-10 had a lounge in first class and economy. Those were the good ‘ol days right? Wonder how much one of those tickets cost from Los Angeles to Chicago. Today you can do it for about $150 each way. Try doing that back in 1971. Either way, enjoy this classic video.

I have wanted to publicly say this for a while, but just haven’t had the guts: I do not like American Airline’s livery. I think it is one of the most dated liveries that just makes American look dated. I think it is so dated, that it is almost cool again for being retro.

Okay, yes I know there is money saved with not painting the aircraft and then more money saved from less weight and fuel, but it doesn’t mean I think it looks like. What hasn’t helped are more airlines are using composite material, which has to be painted gray instead of the polished aluminum. So, you end up with planes that looks like they have some sort of illness. Catching one of their brand new Boeing 737’s at Boeing Field I was somewhat shocked. You have this nice polished aluminum body, but gray nose, winglets, engine cowlings, apu cover and tail. It just looked aged even before it carried its first passenger. I kind of think it looks best on an MD-80.

Since I have been a kid I have been bothered by the fact that there is a red and blue “A” on the logo, then also a blue eagle. It seems too weighted towards the blue and always felt the eagle should be white to even it out.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind the aluminum look. I enjoyed Eastern Air Lines silver livery and I even like American’s Astrojet livery.

For as long as I can remember, I have thought it was about time for American to update their look, but they haven’t and I haven’t heard they plan to anytime soon. If you take away the history and the “U-S-A” (pretend I was chanting that) pride of the livery, do you really like it for only how it looks? I know there are a lot of you in love with this livery, so bring it on. I am hoping there might be a few more of you AA-livery haters out there who have been afraid to voice your opinion, but now it is time to be heard (or at least read).

Although some airline food can be quite good, I would say most airline food is not the best. No matter how bad the food, I certainly wouldn’t go suing an airline for getting an upset tummy.

A Puerto Rican woman is claiming she ate a lizard on her recent American Airlines flight. She states that on her flight from New York’s JFK airport to San Juan, she was watching a movie, eating her in-flight meal, when she inadvertently ate this supposed lizard. Now, don’t just take her word for it… she has a witness. Of course this witness just happens to be her 5 year old son, who claimed that the food she spot out was in fact, “an animal.”

Now she stated in Federal court that after chewing for a bit, she spit out the meat she couldn’t swallow and then claimed it was a lizard. So, let’s imagine for a moment this is all true. That somehow a lizard got into her food, she chewed on it for a bit and spit it out. Although she claims she, “wanted to die”  and became bloated and had diarrhea after her meal, no way is this worth $15 million. Maybe American could give her a free trip voucher and a meal at a nice restaurant in San Juan, but it seems unlikely a lizard was in her food.

American’s attorney states, “there may have been some feathers, or what looked like feathers . . . but there was no lizard.” I am not saying that some bad meat with possible feathers is anything that should be in airline food (or any food for that matter), but it is surely not worth suing over. I guess her 5 year old son was right… it was an animal. I just doubt it was the kind of animal she claims it to be.

If you will be flying American Airlines after December 1st and your flight leaves from 5:00pm to 5:59pm you get to enjoy their 5@5 Happy Hour. All alcoholic beverages will only cost $5 for the entire flight. Make sure to bring your cards, since the entire American fleet is cashless.

“As we wrap up the year, we want to show our customers that we appreciate their business. Offering an inflight happy hour is our small way of saying thank you,” said Rob Friedman, American’s Vice President ’“ Marketing. “We know travelers have many options for air travel and the 5@5 happy hour enhances the travel experience for our customers while adding an element of fun onboard during the holiday travel season.”

This seems like a good idea to remind folks that beverages are there to be purchased, especially during the snowy winter months coming up where passengers might enjoy a cheap drink or two.

Seeing how people are reacting to this news, some are saying this will just promote drinking while flying which is bad. I disagree. Someone who will abuse alcohol and cause issues is going to do it no matter the cost. Plus the flight attendants are trained how to tell a passenger when enough is enough. Cheers to American for this promotion.
