Portland Airport (via the Port of Portland), Emirates Boeing 777 and Lufthansa Boeing 747-8I (via Jeremy Dwyer-Lindren)

This last week and a half has been super busy already for me and it is only going to get a bit crazier (in a good way) for the next week.

I am off to Portland to give a talk on tourism and technology at the GWTTRA Conference. Very excited to share the concept that technology has really improved the experience and I think ushered a new Golden Age of flight. If you have any ideas on tourism, travel, airlines and technology, please share them in the comments and I might be able to add it to my presentation.

Then heading all the way around the world with Emirates on their new non-stop flight from Seattle to Dubai. I am excited to check out Emirates service on their Boeing 777-200LR, as well as seeing what Dubai has to offer.

I will be keeping up on Twitter and Facebook on my aviation themed adventures as always, so please join along.

While on the road, I will be making use of guest blogs and hopefully be able to remotely cover the delivery of Lufthansa’s first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, which is rumored to be delivered around the 24th of this month (nothing official has been announced from Lufthansa or Boeing).

If you have time, stop at the Automatic Restaurant there: http://www.prestoport.com/res/971/4/2277824/Automatic.htm. It’s been many years since I visited Dubai, but I really enjoyed the fare at the Automatic while I was there.

I am a little afraid that the website hasn’t been updated since Sept 2007 and it looks like it was designed in 1999 :). But I will keep an eye out.

Good luck David and may your trip be smooth. As for the talk in Portland….. at least you’re not speaking after this guy….

9:40am -10:00: Proposition of Microformats for Semantically Enriching Gastronomy Websites, Wilhelm Loibl, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria

Who goes to this talk on a Saturday morning? Yikes.

Have a great trip to Dubai David. I’m sure you’ll enjoy Emirates great in-flight service (but then I’m biased!). Be prepared to be amazed at the sheer size of the terminal and again as you exit arrivals!

If you get the chance, visit the Dubai Mall at night and watch the dancing fountains..brilliant!

For me, the flight there and back, plus the airport and airline operations are what will excite me the most.

Now, that doesn’t mean I am not going to enjoy everything else that Dubai has to offer 🙂

What class are you going to be flying in?

It will be business. I do want to head in the back for a bit to see how it is in economy with the ten abreast though. No promises I will stay there long :).

Golden Age of flying? You must be kidding. I drive my hybrid or take Amtrak whenever practical. Wider seats with more legroom, free Wi-Fi, and no baggage fees. You should take Amtrak Cascades between Seattle and Portland. Four round trips per day. Then try it again in 2017 after they finish the track upgrades for 110 mph service and 6 round trips per day.

It depends on how you look at it. For a trip from SEA to PDX, I prefer to drive (which I did). But the fact that tomorrow, I am going to hop on a plane in Seattle. Enjoy great comforts and an in-flight entertainment system with Emirates and about 12 hours later, I land in Dubai with no stops — try that back in the 1970’s. Much louder, longer and WAY more pricey. An economy ticket on this flight will set you back $1500-$2000, where you would normally pay that for a domestic economy seat (in today’s dollars) during the “Golden Age.” I think the airline business before had positives that have been lost somewhat, but you just have to look (and pay) more for them now.

Enjoy your Emirates flight. You will be amazed with the seating and IFE. The service is top-notch. If you can, don’t hesitate to visit the F/C cabin. If the attendants know who you are, they will be more than accommodating. The mini-suites are remarkable. As to Dubai, check out the Emirates Mall (with the ski slope), the view from the Burj Khalifa, the Burj Al Arab brunch, the Irish Village and don’t forget to visit the souks.

Will you be posting a review of your flight?
