United Airlines has shown off a special livery that will be seen on their Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The swooping gold-line livery is inspired by the Dreamliner livery that Boeing designed and is United’s way of celebrating the two company’s long history together. The special livery will be seen on the entire United 787 fleet.

It is a slick looking livery, but a bit disappointing. I have been hoping from the beginning that United would do something special for their first 787. Although, I had a feeling that if they would do something special, it wouldn’t be radical, since the globe is a new brand for United and they wouldn’t want to cause more confusion about their brand.

The interior cabin will use blues and grays, which are consistent with the airline’s newer aircraft today. The 787 will also debut a new in-flight entertainment system that according to United will offer, “more intuitive browsing and more filtering options.”

To start preparations for the first 787 delivery, United has already installed a full-flight simulator at their Houston hub and has started training pilots,  flight attendants and mechanics.

After United takes delivery of their first 787 in September, they will conduct a variety of tests before the aircraft enters service later in the fall. United is hoping to take delivery of five 787 Dreamliners before the end of 2012.

TOKYO June 19, 2012 ’“ ANA today announces an adjustment to its order for Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The four B787-8 aircraft due to be delivered from fiscal year 2013 onwards will now be replaced by B787-9 aircraft. The decision to order more of the larger 787-9 variant will give ANA greater flexibility as it expands its international route network. The total number of aircraft on order remains at 55, split between 36 B787-8 aircraft and 19 B787-9 aircraft.

ANA is the launch customer for the Dreamliner and has so far taken delivery of seven of the 55 aircraft. The aircraft has entered service on domestic Japanese routes and Haneda – Frankfurt since last autumn. ANA plans to launch long-haul 787 services from Tokyo to Seattle and San Jose on the US West Coast in the current fiscal year.

On Monday, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (ZA005) made a special visit to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).  The visit was to help prepare the airport and ground crews for future Dreamliner operations.

ZA005 was at SEA for about two hours completing a gate check, making sure the grew could operate the jet bridge, load cargo, plug in the aircraft and more.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) will be the first airline to start Dreamliner operations to and from Seattle later this fiscal year. Before then, they have announced their intention to start the flight to Narita (NRT) a bit earlier with a Boeing 777.

“We are delighted that we will be soon launching the Seattle-Tokyo service, our 7th gateway in the US,” ANA Seattle Office General Manager Toshio Nomura told AirlineReporter.com. “Originally, we had planned to operate this route with the Boeing 787 starting later this year, but felt that it is significant for us to come here, the home of Dreamliner, sooner and capture the summer demand. Because of that, we plan to use a 777 and transition to the 787 later in the year. ANA looks forward to having you on board to experience the high quality service we thrive upon.”

LOT Polish Airlines is using the addition of the 787 Dreamliner to their fleet as an opportunity to update their interior and livery. The airline describes the new interior as “modern and trendy yet an ethnic design inspired by tradition and famous symbols of Poland.”

Below are multiple photos showing what the new interior of the LOT’s 787 will look like.  LOT will configure their Dreamliner with 18 seats in Business Class in a 2-2-2 layout, 21 seats in premium economy in a 2-3-2 layout and 213 seats in economy in a 3-3-3 layout.

LOT also announced that they plan to use the 787 Dreamliner on their Chicago to Warsaw route starting in January 2013.

On Saturday April 22nd, Japan Airline (JAL) started their first flight using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Flight JAL008 lifted off from Narita, Tokyo (NRT) and then were met with a crowd at Boston Logan (BOS). Not only is this the first route, using the 787 Dreamliner, to the US, it is also the first time the aircraft has been put on a brand new route.

JAL’s first Boston flight was 100% booked and about 98% filled for the rest of April, showing positive demand for the new route.

“We are honored to see the 787 Dreamliner begin its first commercial service to the U.S. with the launch of JAL’s Tokyo to Boston route,” said Boeing Japan president Mike Denton, who was on the flight. “The 787 brings new levels of flexibility to airlines in their network development, and this is exactly the kind of long-haul point-to-point route the 787 was designed to fly. Congratulations to JAL and all their passengers participating in this exciting, pioneering flight.”

JAL took delivery of their first two 787 Dreamliners on March 26th and have announced their plans to operate the aircraft also from Narita to San Diego.

According to Bloomberg, the airline is also looking at using the Dreamliner on flights to Madrid, Berlin and Dusseldorf. JAL is also considering the possibility of re-opening routes using the 787 that were not profitable with the larger Boeing 777 from Nagoya and Osaka’s Kansai airports.
