American Airlines today announced new details and routes for its newest addition to the fleet, theÂ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (789), which isÂ set toÂ arriveÂ in the lastÂ quarter of this year. While American already operates 17 BoeingÂ 787-8s (788s), four of the stretchedÂ -9s, with new business class seats and a cabin configuration to include a new Premium Economy section, will be delivered by the end of December 2016, with a total of 22 on order.
The 789s will initially be based out of American’s home base, Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (DFW), and on November 4 will commence service to Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) and Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU).

Main business cabin on the Swiss 777-300ER
On June 10, SwissÂ International Air Lines officially inaugurated its new Boeing 777-300ER (77W) on its first regularly scheduled daily service to the United States. The debut flight took offÂ from ZÃ¼rich/Kloten Airport (ZRH) and arrived atÂ Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The 77W is the first Boeing product inÂ Swiss’s mainly-AirbusÂ fleet, and carries 55% more passengers than the Airbus A340-300 (343) it replaces on the ZRH-LAX route. Its first 77W, HB-JNA (delivered on January 29) with its special “Faces of SWISS” livery, made the flight.

Swiss gave the public a CGI-based video previewÂ of the all-new aircraft and completely redesigned interior, and AirlineReporter was the first to confirm the delivery date of HB-JNA. Update 6:55PM PT: American Airlines has put out a press release on the addition of theÂ LAX-HKG flight starting September 9. The scheduleÂ information and flight times are:
- Departs LAX at 1:55am, and arrives atÂ HKG at 8:10am the next day (subject to regulatory approval)
- Departs HKG at 8:20pm, and arrives atÂ LAX at 6:40pm
Furthermore, the flight will be operated as part of the joint business venture with Japan Airlines.

An eagle-eyed frequent flyerÂ spotted an update to a page on American Airlines’ website, which indicated that the highly-anticipated service from Los AngelesÂ (LAX) toÂ Hong Kong (HKG)Â will commenceÂ on September 7 using the carrier’s flagship Boeing 777-300ER (77W). AirlineReporter confirmed that the webpage had indeed been updated to include the information on HKG, and tweeted out a screenshot of the page in the wee hours:

Previously, I discussed the process and reasoning for using miles for an economy ticket on an American Airlines Boeing 777-300ER from Los Angeles to Sydney. In this story, I am going to share the actual flight experience, and discuss if this was the right call… or a huge mistake.
FLYING AMERICAN DOWN UNDER: Before the Flight

The day came, and we headed out to dinner before going to LAX to catch our eveningÂ flight. While taking our dinner at a leisurely pace, I checked on our flight status and realized thatÂ I had confused the departure time as being 10:50pm instead of 9:50pm; fortunately I caught my mistake with enough time to rush through our mealÂ and still make it to the airportÂ comfortably.

Less than a week after coveringÂ American Airlines’ launch of their new Los Angeles-Sydney service, I found myself onboardÂ Flight 73 on a last-minute holiday down under. The route featured American’s flagship Boeing 777-300ER, withÂ my personal-favorite business class seat. In spite of holding status on both American and Alaska, whichÂ would entitle me to at least a little bit more legÂ and elbow room in coach, I willingly (!) chose to sit in a regular economy seat for a 15-hour flight… and managed to survive. Â A feat made even more impressive (or harrowing, depending on your point-of-view) by the fact that I was accompanied by my wife.
Now, I’d like to claim credit for taking one for the AirlineReporter team and be able to gloatÂ for makingÂ the trip, but I’m not as magnanimous as my colleague JL, who flew a Spirit Airlines Bare Fare “for science.” There were very strategic, practical, and self-serving reasons forÂ booking seats behind the curtain instead of in front of it.
I’m splitting my experience into two parts:Â first, about why I chose economy (this time), followed up withÂ my actual flight review of American’s economy service to Sydney.
