YVR’s new 2014 baggage carts, now rolling in an airport near you…if you live in Vancouver! Image: YVR

Our friend in Vancouver, Chris, is usually running around YVR airport’s terminals, ramp, and grounds.  With his smartphone in hand, he tweets, blogs, posts, and helps to keep YVR’s social media presence timely and responsive. He’s often the “voice” behind the airport’s Twitter account, @yvrairport.

A couple of weeks ago, Chris did stay still for a while, long enough to put together a nifty video announcing the arrival of YVR’s 3,000 new baggage carts.  At most airports, I don’t think that new carts would warrant even a press release, much less a video. But at YVR, it’s a big deal in a very tongue-in-cheek kind of way. And remember, when you travel through Vancouver’s multi-award-winning airport, you can use the carts for free.

Chris’ colleague, Alisa, wrote up the press release about the new carts. I’m guessing that she did it because Chris was busy getting his “creative juices” flowing while shooting and editing the video. I’m pretty sure he did the voice-over, too, and that might be him putting the giant bag on the cart.

Nicely done, Chris…just like your blog post about one of YVR’s bathrooms being nominated for the “Best Bathroom in Canada” contest.  “Let’s flush out the competition,” indeed!

Enjoy the video:

Thanks for the fun post, Howard. In June I connected through YVR for the first time in ~10 years. Hands-down, I agree that it is one of the most user-friendly airports that I’ve ever experienced. While a cart is a bit silly for some on a short and light trip, for those needing to tote larger loads, or perhaps the (almost) elderly with a minor need, a good cart is wonderful. That good carts are free at YVR is a major bonus for those that need them. (Who among us has not been caught fishing for that last foreign currency coin when time is tight?) Offering them free is a truly brilliant idea and I have no doubt that the service will enhance YVR’s already excellent reputation. A worthy and fun post! -C.

Thanks, Cook, and I agree with your observations about baggage carts. Like you, I’ve been stuck at countless airports with the wrong currency, trying to decide if I really need a cart. Wheelie bags are a great invention, but sometimes you need something more robust, and bigger. And I’m lucky to have YVR as my home airport – one of the best on the planet. h

I wonder what the old ones were like? Looking at the cart in the video, it looks like the ones we have had in MIA for the past two years. However, I do like the FREE part as the only time you get it free here is if you find one left by the previous patron before the cart patrol grabs it up.
