In part one of this series I provided an overview of my airline sampler trip (five airlines over four days) and offered my thoughts on my very first flight with Virgin America, from Dallas (DAL) to San Francisco (SFO.) ForÂ part two I reviewed United’s 787-8 BusinessFirst service from SFOÂ to LosÂ Angeles (LAX). TodayÂ we pick up just a stone’s throw away from LAX, at Long Beach Airport (LGB), for a quick journey to Salt Lake City (SLC)Â withÂ JetBlue.
Let me first say, I’ve always been fond of JetBlue. Except their route map. They simply don’t exist in my neck of the woods, so the opportunityÂ to check them out never presented itself. When opportunity doesn’t knock, we’ve got to go looking.Â Enter the Airline Sampler, a trip focused solely on getting out and experiencing new things. I was excited to find a way to incorporate my first B6 (their airline code) flight into my adventure.

Here we pick back up at SFO for a quick journey down to LAX in the first class cabin aboard a United 787-8.
This leg of myÂ airline sampler was actually the catalyst for the entire trip. I happened to stumble upon an announcementÂ that United would be briefly returning the 787 to domestic service for once weekly (Friday) service from SFO-LAX.Â I didn’t get the opportunity to check out the DreamlinerÂ when United had them on domestic runs when they were first introduced. After a number of friends booked their own 787 experiences only to be disappointed by the wrong plane at the gate,Â due to operational issues,Â I decided to hold off. I was skeptic for too long and wound up missing my opportunity. Some time had passedÂ and UnitedÂ now had a number of 787s in service, so I figured that the time was right.
The economy fare was very attractively priced at a meager $72.10 — what a bargain! When United.com solicited me to pay an extra $29 for economy plus I jumped atÂ it.
As a Boeing fan-boy, I was excited, but that joy would soon evaporate like spilled Jet A on a hot day.Â It pains me to report that problems began before I everÂ stepped foot on the planeâ€¦
“You’re crazy!” That’s the most common reaction I get from non-AvGeeks after describing in detail one of my typical “plane crazy” trips. Unlike a normal person, my travel tends to focus not on the destination, but the journey. That is, the airlines, airplanes, airports, and last but most certainly not least: hap-hazard routing in an effort to add the most diversity to my route map. I just completed one such trip, which I affectionately referred to as my #AirlineSampler.
Planning for this 6k (5,966) mile trek began when I learned United would briefly return a 787 to domestic service.Â What began as a trip to fly on my first 787 quickly escalatedÂ into a cobweb of lines I’d lay across the Great American West (for Missourians, everything west of the arch is west). The trip ended in just under four days, having flown with fiveÂ airlines and visiting eight airports along the way. Better yet, these would be my very first trips with three of the airlines.

The experiences I had over this long weekend were both incredible and eye-opening. I want to have enough “runway” as it were to discuss my thoughts on each of the airlines, so we’ll spread these out across a number of posts. At this point, it’s important to note these reviews will be from the perspective of a frequent flier who purposefully chooses Southwest over the other guys most times.Â I’ve written extensively about my love for Southwest so, for the most part, I’ll leave them out of this seriesÂ which was focused solely on getting out and exploring the what airline diversity remains in the US. For continuity, I’ll note where I used Southwest for re-positioning and leave it at that.
