This livery is unique, but it seems confused. I like the nice silver base and the blue strips on front. However, the red/orange font doesn’t go too well and the tail seems confused with having strips, gradient, and the logo.

Safi Airways was founded in 2006 and flies between Afghanistan, Germany, Iraq, and UAE. Their fleet has one Airbus A340-300, two Boeing 737-300’s, and two Boeing 767-200ER’s. It is headquartered in Kabul, Afghanistan, with an office in Dubai, UAE.

One of their Boeing 767’s is the official plane for the president of Afghanistan.

THANK YOU YVETTE FOR THE TIP!

Albanian McDonnell Douglas MD-82 ZA-ASA

Albanian McDonnell Douglas MD-82 ZA-ASA

Every week I try to show a different airline livery. I have always been facinated with airline liveries. This week I came across what I think is the ugliest one I have seen so far. It just doesn’t make any sense.  You have this silver body, with white tale, and a big white stripe running down the middle?

What makes this better? They have rotating images on their website and on shows a Boeing 747-400 with a different (and better) Albanian Airlines livery, but it is obviously photo shopped. (although maybe they will get one soon? Their website says, “we are in the process of adding our fleet by B747, 757, 767.”)

They only have four aircraft, one MD-82 (pictured) and three BAe 146’s. The BAe’s have a different livery (the best of the three in my opinion) than the MD-82 or the photo shopped Boeing 747, which makes me think the MD-82 is sporting a livery of the previous airline they bought the jet from and they slapped their logo on it.

I can understand saving a few bucks, but it doesn’t help them create a recognizable brand and would make me think twice about flying. However, they were using just TU-134s only eight years ago and I much rather fly on an ugly livery’d MD-82 than a pretty and matching TU-134.

Horizon Air's UW livery taken during the football game yesterday.

Horizon Air's UW livery taken during the football game yesterday. Photo taken by Sam Al-Khoury, UW Seattle graduate and co-worker.

I am a proud graduate of the University of Washington (in Seattle, WA) and yesterday was their homecoming game against the Oregon Ducks (43 to 19, we lost, I don’t want to talk about that…). During the game, Horizon Air flew one of their Bombardier Q400’s over the field with a special UW livery. I would have loved to been there to see the flyover myself (and oh yea, the game too), but I was not able to. Luckily I made a call out to all my friends to take photos of the flyover for me. Had quite a few people come through with flying colors!

Dan Russo, vice president, Marketing and Communications for Horizon Air said, “This is one of the most ambitious promotions we’ve ever done. It will generate a lot of excitement around our partnerships with these schools and strengthen Horizon’s brand as ‘Wings of the Great Northwest.’ ”

This is one of five current variants of collegiate liveries. The others include:  Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State and, on Nov. 8, 2009, Boise State will join the fleet. I was a little upset to see that University of Washington had a prop and our rival Washington State University had a jet. However, Clint who works for Horizon Marketing told me, “We’re in the process of phasing out the jets and they will all be props once that is done. BSU will also be a prop,” which makes me feel a bit better! I think it looks better on the Q400 anyhow.

My team might have lost the game, but I think Horizon gained a great publicity idea!

Some special liveries might change the look of the tail or put a little graphic on the side of the plane. However, AirTran went all out for its Atlanta Falcon’s livery, called “Falcon 1.” AirTran is the official airline of the Atlanta Falcons and the two will have joint advertising.

There is also a very interesting video here, showing the transformation.
