On Saturday, May 19th from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Snohomish County Airport (Paine Field – KPAE) and the Washington Pilots Association ’“ Paine Field Chapter will present Paine Field Aviation Day and you should come.

Admission will be $5 per person or $10 for the entire family. Admission also includes free access to the Flying Heritage Collection and the Historic Flight Foundation. Parking is free and there will be shuttles running from three designated lots throughout the day. The shuttles will drop guests off at the FHC or HFF and there will also be shuttles inside the airport to take guests from one side of the event to the other.

This will be the 17th year that the event is held and provides a bunch of activities:

From the WPA’s press release, “Come see the latest in general aviation aircraft as well as many of the airplanes owned and operated by local private pilots. Vintage aircraft and warbirds will be on display thanks to the participation of the Museum of Flight Restoration Center, Flying Heritage Collection, Historic Flight Foundation and Cascade Warbirds. Among these will be WWII aircraft and many pre-war military and civilian aircraft. Also, in conjunction with the 70th Anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, there will be up to 5 vintage B-25 aircraft on
display. Along with these fascinating and historic aircraft, there will be automobile displays, unlimited hydroplane displays, and some of Paine Field’s fire apparatus will also be on hand for kids to get an upclose look. Beginning at 12:00 pm, the warbirds will take flight, as well as formation flying by The Blackjack Squadron, the Cascade Warbirds and other aviation groups.”

Due to a schedule conflict I wasn’t able to make it to General Aviation Day at Paine Field last weekend, but luckily a lot of you were. Since I was going through to see what I missed, I wanted to share with you as well.

Even though there was a lot of very cool vintage warplanes there, being an airline geek, I think the pinnacle was a low pass by a Boeing 747 Dreamlifter, taken by Liembo and posted to his Flicker account:

Do not worry, for all your warplane fans, there are plenty of other things to drool over:

General Aviation Day at Paine Field is back! What an amazing and great event celebrating aviation. People from all over will fly and drive in to share their love of flight.

The flyer above gives you most details, but this is a great family event, since it is FREE. Even though seeing all the aircraft is wonderful, I think the best part of the event are all the airplane owners who volunteer their time and gas to fly kids via the Young Eagle Flight program.

I heard that Boeing will have  747 DreamLifter for people to get close to, so that should be a nice treat.

Sadly, I am going to be out of town on Saturday. If you are going, take some photos and/or videos and email them to me da***@ai*************.com and I will share them!

What a beautiful and sunny day to be hanging around a bunch of airplanes and aviation enthusiast. This Saturday I was able to spend a few hours at Paine Field for the General Aviation Day put on by the Washington Pilots Association and Snohomish County’s Paine Field.

Not only were there amazing historical aircraft, but people from all around flew their personal planes and also had them on display (I was sad I had to drive). Even though there were lots of impressive aircraft, seeing pilots donate their time and fuel to fly 8 to 17 year olds for free really put a smile to my face. The Young Eagles allows kids the chance to try out aviation and get the motivated to fly. Two rows of personal planes (ranging from Cessnas to Bonanzas) were lined up ferrying over 220 kids up into the blue sky. Every child coming off those planes had a smile from ear to ear. What a great program! If you have an airplane and want to share the experience of flight to children, join on up (If you have an airplane [or helicopter] and want to fly an almost 30yr old blogger, email me :)).

Unfortunately I had to leave after a few hours because of other engagements, but Liz Matzelle (@ImperfectSense) was there to take wonderful photos of the aircraft in flight [which is great, because Liz has a wonderful eye when it comes to photography and took better photos than I could have :)]

If you missed out this year, don’t worry, I am sure it will be back next year. It is definitely worth the drive and the free admission! Until then, if you are a pilot or have an interest in general aviation, looked at joining the Washington Pilots Association — they work hard to keep the spirit of general aviation alive in Washington state!
